Ella Belenky’s work references notions of the individual and collective memory in a world where communication and relationships must also slide between different and sometimes conflicting modes of being. Update describes, in physical form, the circular space of a virtual scroll. The work is a part of a larger investigation into the digital and corporeal cloud; a space representative of both power and fragility.
Ella shifts from contemplating a sense of memory that exists in a virtual sphere to one based in our natural environment. ‘Memory of Bird’ describes an experience of listening to birds while growing up in rural Vermont; the populations of which are drastically diminishing from the effects of climate change. Both pieces speak to feelings of connection and disconnection and help to describe a contemporary state of paradoxical being.
Ella is currently finishing her MA in print at the Royal College of Art.
